DIY Projects for Parents

If you’re a parent creating your home while wrangling little ones, you may be worried about how some of your projects will hold up or actually work in real life. While no home looks like a magazine all the time, getting creative when it comes to storing kid’s belongings, optimizing your home’s space, and creating playful spaces for your kids can make your home function better for your family. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite DIY projects for all the parents.

1. DIY Pennant Flag Featuring Your Child’s Name

Vintage pennant flags are an adorable way to add personality to any room. I made this one for my son’s room using my Cricut. It was a quick, easy DIY and I was able to let my son help me make it which he loved. Read the full blog post for a list of materials, a step-by-step tutorial and some tips and tricks I learned along the way.

2. Build A Window Bench Seat With Storage

No matter how big your house is, storage seems to always be in short supply with kids. Adding this window bench seat with hidden storage to our dining room turned office in our second home was such an easy solution. Check out the blog post to see how I did it and what you’ll need to recreate it.

3. Get Creative With Toy Storage

It seems like toys are taking over our house. I knew I needed a better organization plan so I bought a few very helpful organizers to keep my son’s toys visible to him without overwhelming me. Clear storage cubes are my favorite way to store his toys. Read this blog to shop my favorite options and see other innovative ways to keep the clutter to a minimum.

4. DIY Wood Outdoor Bench For Playing In The Backyard

We were in need of some extra seating on our backyard paver patio and so I decided to build a long wood bench. It’s a great beginner DIY and perfect for a Spring or Summer outdoor DIY project. Our family uses it when playing in the backyard and while sitting around the fire pit in the winter. Check out this blog post for how to build it.

5. Create An Arts & Crafts Cart

There are so many uses for a 3-tier rolling cart in a playroom but my favorite use is for art supplies. We keep a container of paint supplies on the bottom tier, coloring books and paper on the middle tier, and all my son’s markers, crayons, and pencils on the top tier. The uses are really unlimited for a rolling cart like this! Get more ideas by reading this toy organization blog post.

6. Build A Sandbox And Water Table For Outside

After using a sandbox table at school, my son started requesting to have one at home. I loved the idea of a sandbox table versus a traditional sandbox where kids are likely to get covered head to toe in sand. This is a pretty easy build that will keep your kids entertained for hours. It can also double as a water table! See how I built it here.

7. DIY Magnetic Play Wall

My son is a big fan of playing with magnets and magnatiles, so I wanted to create a place where he could let his imagination run wild. I built this simple magnetic play wall and he loves it. This is an easy DIY that I think anyone can do to fit your space! Check out the blog post to see how easy it was.

These simple DIY projects are something you and your kids will enjoy for years to come!
