DIY Sandbox Table
My son fell in love with the sandbox table at his preschool and has been asking for one at home. It looked like a pretty easy DIY build so I decided to try and build one for him!
A sandbox table is the best of both worlds - the fun of a sandbox but instead of sitting in it getting covered head to toe in sand, kids can stand next to it and play keeping the sand just on the hands and arms (mostly). It can also double as a water table!
It has become our favorite summer backyard activity!
How to Build a Sandbox Table
Tools and Materials:
70qt clear tote with lid (45.25” x 21” x 5.75”) Here is the exact one I used
(3) 8ft Pressure Treated 2”x4”s (non PT works too)
3” deck screws - Click Here
(2) bags of Play Sand - Click Here
Cut List:
(2) 45” boards - these will be the long boards along the side of the plastic bin
(6) 22” boards - these will be the four legs and two brace pieces under the plastic bin
(2) 11.75” boards - these are small side pieces on the short side of the plastic bin
Total Project Cost: $68.43 after 7% tax
2'“x4”x8’ - (3) at $5.48 = $16.44
(1) 70qt storage bin = $26.98
Play Sand - (2) bags at $4.78 = $9.56
3” Screws - (1) box of 64 = $10.98
What kind of sand to use to fill a sandbox:
I never really thought about where the sand comes from that is in a sandbox until I needed to fill our sandbox table. My plan was to just visit the garden section at my hardware store and buy bags of sand that are used for pavers. Luckily a nice employee at my local store told me that they actually sell bags of sand specifically made for sandboxes. These bags were sold on the aisle where they sell bags of concrete in the construction supply area of the store.
