Before Christmas I had my first experience using polymer clay and I fell in love! I made these marble trinket dishes and they made the perfect DIY Christmas gifts for my family and girlfriends. This is a fun and easy DIY that anyone can do!
Supplies You Will Need:
Small Paint Brush
Baking Sheet Pan
Parchment Paper
How to Make a DIY Clay Trinket Dish:
For this project you will need to use polymer oven-bake clay. I have used both Sculpey and CraftSmart brands and they both work great. An important tip that I want to mention is that the clay will not mold the way you need it to if it is too hard or cold. I actually sat on the clay packages for 10 minutes just using my own body heat to warm them up before getting started. Then I used 1/4 of the clay from each color and rolled each one into string-like strips. I wrapped the strips around each other and then rolled them into a ball. In order to get the marble look, you need to twist the ball in different directions almost ripping the ball in half. Do this until you get the marble look.
Once you have the marble look that you like, use a rolling pin or cylinder shape to roll the clay ball flat. I then used my fingers to pinch the sides up all the way around the edges to create a little lip. Place your trinket dishes on a baking pan (I lined mine with parchment paper). Bake them in a preheated over at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 20min. Remove from oven and allow to completely cool and come to room temperature.
To give the trinket dishes a high-end look, I applied gold Rub Nā Buff using a small paint brush around the lip of the dish. You can also use gold craft paint. Allow to dry for a couple hours and they are done!
This is such a fun and easy DIY gift idea that both kids and adults can do. Make them as gifts, stocking stuffers, or as a fun holiday party activity. You can even make larger ones to create a bowl shape to hold keys or larger objects.
