7 Beginner Friendly Accent Walls

Here are 7 different accent walls that are easy to do for a beginner. These accent walls work great in a bedroom, entryway, hallway, bathroom, and more!

  1. Board and Batten Accent Wall

Board and Batten is a classic and timeless accent wall that works in bedrooms, nurseries, hallways, bathrooms, dining rooms and laundry rooms. You can adjust the height of the board and batten depending on the height of your ceilings to achieve the best look. I usually recommend to bring the height of your board and batten up to two-thirds the height of your wall. Click here to learn how to calculate the spacing of your boards for board and batten. Watch this video tutorial on my YouTube which teaches you how to install board and batten.

2. Tall Board and Batten

Similar to board and batten, a tall version also has a classic and timeless look. The tall version works great in hallways and entryways, as well as on a feature wall behind a bed in a bedroom. This accent wall is a great choice if you have lower ceilings in your home because it makes the ceilings appear higher in your space. Watch this video tutorial on my YouTube which teaches you how to install floor to ceiling board and batten.

3. Geometric Accent Wall

A geometric accent wall is a fun and bold accent wall that can bring a lot of character into a space. They look great in a bedroom, play room, and living room. I recommend painting it with an accent color to really make a bold statement in your space. This is an easy accent wall for a beginner because there is not a specific design you have to follow and you can play around with the placement of your diagonal boards.

4. Beadboard Paneling

Beadboard paneling accent walls are another classic look that has more of a traditional style. They are a great choice for bathrooms and laundry rooms. It is a great beginner accent wall because you can purchase the sheets of beadboard from your local hardware store and even ask them to cut them down for you. For install, a nail gun or even a hammer and finishing nails is all you need to attach them to your walls. Watch my full video tutorial on YouTube showing you how to install beadboard.

5. Brick Paneling

Brick paneling is another easy accent wall because it is sold in 4’x8’ sheets at Home Depot. You can leave it as-is with the red brick look, you can paint it a solid color, or you can add a faux German-shmear technique by rubbing joint compound right on the brick panels. Either way, it adds a lot of texture to a space and I think it looks great in any room of the house.

6. Vertical Slat Wall

A vertical slat wall looks great in entryways, on a TV wall, or behind a bed. It can be done with or without power tools. If you use PVC lattice boards from Home Depot, they are thin enough that a $20 pair of miter shears from Amazon can cut them which means no saw! They can even be attached to the wall with heavy duty double sided tape. If you are comfortable using tools, then you can use 1”x2” pine boards with a miter saw and nail gun. This accent wall works with pretty much all design styles and is a great choice if you have vaulted or slanted ceilings.

7. Sharpie Chevron Wall

A sharpie chevron wall is another accent wall that requires zero power tools. It mimics the look of wallpaper when complete and works with modern, trendy, and playful design styles. Because it is a little time consuming to apply, I usually recommend using it on smaller walls like on one wall of a bathroom or bedroom.
