10 DIY Accent Wall Ideas to Enhance Your Home’s Style

Adding an accent wall is a popular way to infuse personality and style into your home. It's a simple and cost-effective DIY project that can transform any room instantly. Say goodbye to blank walls you don’t know what to do with… If you're looking to spice up any room, I’ve curated a list of 10 DIY accent wall ideas that will make an impact on your home’s decor, but not your wallet. Let's dive in!

Geometric Precision:

Opt for a modern and sophisticated accent wall by using painter's tape to create geometric shapes like diamonds, hexagons, or chevron patterns. Paint each section in complementary or contrasting colors for a bold statement. You can also use small slats of wood to create the geometric patterns. I love the accent wall I did in 2020 in my son’s playroom using wood slats and painting it all the same color. The monochromatic pattern adds so much visual interest without being “too much.” Watch my detailed tutorial on how to do a Geometric Wall here.

Bold Color Block:

If you’re not quite ready to paint an entire room a bold color, try painting an accent wall. Choose a vibrant hue that complements your existing decor. Color blocking adds energy and personality to any room.

Wallpaper Wonder:

Explore the vast variety of peel-and-stick wallpapers available in all kinds of interior design styles. Choose a pattern that resonates with your home, whether it's delicate stripes, intricate damask, or rustic woodgrain. Do just one wall or cover an entire room. Bonus fun: surprise people by putting it on the ceiling or inside a closet! If you don’t want to spend the money on wallpaper, try using a sharpie to doodle a design on your wall like I did making a chevron pattern in our $100 bathroom makeover.

Faux Panels:

Experiment with textured materials like faux brick or stone panels to add depth and character to your accent wall. These options provide a rustic and cozy feel to your space. The custom design feels high-end because it’s personalized to your exact home. In my home, I created a faux stone wall using these faux stone panels — which was quite controversial online. I wanted to create a country cottage vibe and it turned out exactly how I pictured it. I have also installed a faux brick wall in my garage as well as in our last house using these brick panels. Beadboard is another example of a great way to add visual interest on a budget. I used beadboard panels in our mudroom and that adds just a warm and inviting feel to any space. Mirror Magic:

Install a large decorative mirror as the focal point of your accent wall. The mirror will not only add visual interest but also create the illusion of a larger space and reflect natural light. It’s the perfect selfie spot and adds dimension to an otherwise blank wall.

Board and Batten:

I’m a huge fan of using simple wood pieces to add visual interest to a room. You’ll find all kinds of wood accent walls in my home from my entryway to my guest bedroom to my son’s room. There are so many ways to make this look unique and feel special. And best of all, these kinds of accent walls are so affordable and easy. One of our living room walls got a glow-up using this same process and I’m so happy with how it turned out. Watch the full tutorial here.

Remember, the key to a successful accent wall is choosing a design that resonates with your personal style and complements the overall aesthetic of your home. Let your creativity flow and have fun transforming your space!
